Adult Swim's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Major Renewal for Two More Seasons.
In October of last year, Adult Swim saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the channel launched a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. At a time often defined by bleakness, this show's sincerity resonated deeply and propelled it a breakout hit.
A Significant Investment
On December 18th, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.
"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Executive Acclaim
Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and championed its uniquely offbeat style.
"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about watching this lovable family navigate their simple existence.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to evolve comedy past its long-running layer of irony. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
Future Seasons
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to bask in the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
