California's Governor Acknowledges He Is Weighing a 2028 Presidential Run

The California governor, a prominent Democratic figure, has indicated that he plans to decide on whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 following the 2026 elections wrap up.

"Yeah, I would be lying if I said no," the governor commented when asked about contemplating a White House bid after the 2026 midterms. "I'd just be lying. And I'm not."

The governor's tenure as California's leader ends in the start of 2027, and he cannot run again. However, he cautioned that any choice is a long way off.

"The future will decide," he added.

Increased Visibility as a Trump Critic

He has come to the forefront as a high-profile opponent of the Trump administration, employing his social media accounts and championing a initiative that would increase Democratic House seats in as a counter to GOP gerrymandering. This action has made him a target from adversaries.

Clash on Transportation

The former president's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, alleged that Newsom is indifferent about the state's residents in a recent segment on a major news network. Duffy disclosed intentions to pull federal funds from the state and suggested suspending the power to issue commercial driver's licenses.

"I plan to withdraw $160m from California," he stated, in the wake of a recent deadly accident in the state involving an unauthorized semi truck driver that resulted in loss of life and injured individuals.

The governor's team pointed out that the federal government had approved the driver's employment multiple times, which enabled him to secure a CDL under federal law.

The transportation secretary had before indicated he was blocking $40m from California for ignoring English language requirements for truck drivers.

Strong Response from the Team

"Former D-list reality star, now cabinet member, continues to misunderstand U.S. regulations," Newsom's office responded in a previous statement countering the secretary's comments. "For now, in contrast to this person, we rely on data: California CDL holders had a death rate significantly lower than the national average. Texas – the single state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate substantially higher than California. Facts don't lie. The federal leadership misleads."

Voter Sentiment and Political Future

A recently conducted poll showed that a majority of the party and almost half of voters indicated that the governor should run for the White House in the next election cycle. In recent years, Newsom's favorability has risen to an mean of about one-third from around 30%, while his disapproval has dropped from an average of previous highs to under 40%.

Earlier this year, Newsom remarked while on a trip several swing states that he had "no clue" about his intentions for the next presidential election.

He also referenced his personal struggles, including being identified as dyslexic at the age of five.

"The thought that a guy who had modest test scores, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was typically not at the front – that such a possibility is discussed is, by itself, amazing," he stated. "It's anyone's guess? I'm looking forward to who steps forward in 2028 and who rises to the occasion. And that is the issue for the American people."
