Far-Right Former Lawmaker J.A. Kast Elected as Chile's Incoming President.
In a decisive second-round vote, ultra-conservative figure José Antonio Kast has won the presidency in Chile.
A Clear-Cut Victory
With more than 99% of votes tallied, Kast won 58.17% of the votes, defeating leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who earned 41.83%.
This marks Kast's third presidency, having earlier been lost by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.
Campaign Centered On Law and Order and Migration
Recognized for his unwavering Catholic views and regard for the rule of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's platform was largely focused on promises to combat rising crime and drastically curb migration.
He consistently pointed to migrants, notably the around 330,000 unauthorized individuals in Chile, for crime rates. Throughout the election cycle, he issued an stern warning for them to leave before the inauguration or face removal.
His plans envisioned U.S.-style measures such as constructing holding facilities, border walls, security fences, and bolstering the military presence on the northernmost frontier.

Leading Without a Clear Mandate
Despite his decisive electoral win, Kast does not hold an absolute majority in Congress, not in the Chamber of Deputies or the Senate, even when various conservative parties are combined together.
This political situation could complicate his plans, including a vow to reduce public spending by a significant sum within a year and a half—a proposal for which he has yet to provided a clear explanation.
"We have several questions about how a Kast administration will look like that remain unclear because he has not detailed the way he will achieve them," said a political professor.
The professor stated, "In terms of economic policy, it is very likely we will see spending cuts typical of the right-wing. However where there is far less doubt is on law and order, because that has been his central theme across the race."
