Paceman Gus Atkinson Compounds England's Injury Worries.

'Serious blow' for the touring side as Atkinson leaves the field due to a hamstring issue.

The pace bowler increased the fitness woes of the England squad when he left the playing area early on day two in the Melbourne Test in the Ashes series.

Atkinson pulled up with his left hamstring after the final ball in his spell during the morning session.

The touring camp stated Atkinson had experienced "tightness" and required time off the field in order to be assessed "over the next few hours".

The final Test of the tour beginning on 4 January begins this coming Sunday.

The visitors have been without strike bowlers Mark Wood due to knee trouble and another paceman because of a side injury on this Ashes tour.

Matthew Fisher was added to the party as cover for Wood.

The seamer had a tough time during the first two matches, managing only three wickets.

He was omitted of the third Test, only to be brought back for the fourth Test in the playing XI.

Surrey's Atkinson showed better form in Melbourne, claiming a couple of wickets in Australia's first innings, then making 28 as a batsman being one of only three English batsmen to get into double digits.

Following a brief spell at the end of day one, he returned on Saturday morning and removed Scott Boland edging to the keeper.

Unfortunately, towards the conclusion of his spell, he bowled a change of pace to the batsman and promptly felt his left hamstring.

Gus Atkinson was brought back for the Boxing Day Test after being left out the Adelaide game.
