Putin Pledges Steady Crude Oil Supplies to India in Rebuff of Washington Pressure
During a unambiguous statement to the West, President Vladimir Putin informed PM Narendra Modi that Russia is prepared to maintain “unbroken” shipments of crude oil to India. These remarks came as the two leaders met in New Delhi and asserted their bilateral ties were “resistant to outside influence.”
A Statement Directed at the West
Putin's comments, made on Friday, seemed to be a pointed rebuke at the United States and its allies, that have repeatedly attempted to urge New Delhi into reducing its close ties with Moscow. The context comes after recent American measures, notably additional trade penalties on India due to its acquisition of Moscow's energy exports.
“Our nation is a trustworthy source of energy resources and anything necessary for the advancement of India’s industry,” the Russian president stated. “Russia is prepared to continue securing the consistent flow of resources for the fast-expanding Indian economy.”
Modi, without mentioning oil specifically, supported the focus by stating that “energy security has been a robust and important pillar of the India-Russia partnership.”
Challenging US Interference
Prior to the meeting, in a media interview, Putin had criticized American pressure regarding India's energy purchases. Putin stated, “Should America is entitled to buy our uranium, how can you deny India have the same privilege?”
Putin's arrival marked his initial journey to India after the beginning of the situation in Ukraine, and the two nations made a visible effort to demonstrate that the friendship between the two leaders was undisturbed.
An Unusual Greeting
In a unusual move, Prime Minister Modi welcomed directly Putin right off the plane. The two embraced warmly as close allies before having a closed-door supper the night before the summit.
The Indian prime minister later described India's alliance with Russia as “a lodestar” and said it was “based on reciprocal esteem and deep trust.”
Reaffirming Defence and Economic Partnerships
The bilateral summit produced multiple key agreements in the fields of military and trade relations. A cornerstone agreement was the signing of an joint economic plan that runs to 2030, which aims to boost commerce to $100bn each year by the target year.
Furthermore agreed to reshape their defence ties. While Russia is still India's largest source of arms, this role has diminished over the past decade as India aims to diversify its sources.
The official release highlighted cooperation in the joint production of cutting-edge weapons platforms, even if specific details of deals for the Sukhoi Su-57 were not made.
In conclusion, Moscow and Delhi restated that amid the “ongoing challenging, tense, and volatile geopolitical situation, the Indo-Russian partnership stay resilient to outside forces.”
