The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Chose the Wrong Critical Role Song

The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated series from Critical Role, unveiled an exciting introductory sequence. It features the beloved cast of misfits, outcasts, and rogues fighting hard and taking names, while also hinting at several agonizing backstories for key figures including Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, Fjord.

All in all, the intro appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that something was lost in the song choice.

This sequence employs "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional composition created by producer and singer the talented musician. It's a track from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second release put out by the production company's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful sentimental option, and I suspect that fans of the second campaign will appreciate its presence.

But for me, The Mighty Nein's opening doesn't quite capture the excitement and energy that accompanied the show's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic in my view when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it only got better when cast member the performer added lyrics to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.

Including singing from one actress, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the track was memorable and fun. At the time, I hadn't even watched the second campaign yet, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my device. It's a song that excites you before you start an episode of fantasy hijinks.

The show's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the right notes for me. It's an impressive piece of music, but based on my understanding of the group, I can't help but feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.

Naturally, the creators has already said that the series will have some surprises and variations from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its intro seems to be one of them.

The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on Prime Video from November 19. If you can't wait until then, or want a head start to get to know the personas of the second series, the original episodes are accessible on Spotify and the video site.
