The teenager has featured in seven matches for the Spanish giants, featuring five appearances in the starting lineup.

Whenever a teenage creates Real Madrid a historic moment in a pivotal Champions League tie against City, it inevitably draws acclaim and the spotlight.

In only his first start in the tournament - and fifth game for the club - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the 15-time European champions secured a three-nil round of 16 first-leg advantage at the Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also made his club debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted Los Blancos defeat the English champions in Tuesday's second leg to secure a quarter-final place.

Aged 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder was the team's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, beating Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.

Rapid Ascent Through The Academy

This talent is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most promising protegees.

He joined Madrid from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe's youth teams, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a positive impact.

He progressed to the reserve side and it was in a pre-season game in which they faced the academy's first team, then managed by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who replaced Xabi Alonso in January.

Spanish media would later label the moment as "love at first sight," noting Pitarch stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, character and determination he added to the team.

'His Best Attribute Is His Character'

In the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Alonso invited Pitarch to train with the first team and awarded him minutes during pre-season.

Yet, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the turning point in his development as he came on as a late substitute in both ties against Benfica that set up the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I have dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the first day I began playing football, every day you head to training and every day you play a match," stated the player after his first appearance.

"I have just achieved my ambition with the best team in the planet and in the top tournament."

Given a starting debut in La Liga against his former club - where he was for several seasons after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his place for the next four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opening.

Pitarch has seized it with performances that have belied his age and inexperience.

"He is a very quick footballer, and you can see his capabilities," said the coach. "He is extremely energetic, with great endurance, work-rate and mobility."

The player's mindset has also stood out to his coach.

"His greatest quality is his personality," continued Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the ball, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.

"I realize fans might be astonished to watch him make his debut in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had complete trust in him to do his normal game.

"Thiago will keep receiving chances with the first team. It is delightful to coach a player like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and grew up fully immersed in the local game, progressing through local academies before entering the club's famous La Fabrica system.

He holds both Spanish and Moroccan nationality, offering him the choice to play for either country at the highest level.

According to international regulations, players may appear for different countries at youth level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only binding once they play in a competitive senior international match.

Pitarch has featured for Spain at youth level, representing both the U19 and U20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain made it to the quarter-finals.

Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to either senior national team, who are monitoring his progress with interest.

In a recent interview, Pitarch confirmed: "I haven't made my final decision so far. Things are great with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a decision in the near future."

This scenario mirrors that of other bi-national players such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. While 18-year-old Yamal chose Spain, Diaz opted to represent the Atlas Lions.

Focus on the Future

For now, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and repaying Arbeloa's faith.

He featured for over an hour in the 2-1 victory at City, which completed a five-one aggregate success and a quarter-final tie with Bayern Munich.

He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Angel underscored the coach's confidence in the next generation to aid the club pursue future success.

Following his notable contributions so far on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is tipped to be a central figure in that.

"The manager handles me the identical way. We deal with it very normally. I try not to think about it too much - I have to earn my minutes on the field," he commented following the win at Etihad Stadium.
