The Whites Keep Liverpool at Arm's Length to Earn Valuable Point at Anfield
Two undefeated records continued in place at Anfield, but only one side could derive real contentment from the result. Daniel Farke's men executed a textbook game plan of stifling and containing Liverpool, with the first goalless draw of Arne Slot's reign highlighting the persistent limitations within the reigning champions' recent upturn.
Resolute Masterclass Secures Vital Point
A lacklustre goalless draw, the first in 84 matches for Liverpool, was largely attributable to the defensive dominance of the excellent defensive duo Struijk and Bijol, combined with the Anfield side's failure to break down a compact visitors' unit. Liverpool were limited to hopeful opportunities, and a sprinkling of boos echoed around the famous ground at the final signal on a sluggish display.
"If I don't utilise the whole squad and we have a schedule like this, I would not make changes," Daniel Farke explained. "For a player like Dominic I have to look after him. We all know his past couple of years was difficult. He is in incredible shape but it's vital I manage him and sometimes the head needs to win over the heart."
Liverpool's Struggle in the Final Third
Arne Slot's team at first displayed more zip and precision than in previous outings, with Jeremie Frimpong prominent on the flank. However, golden opportunities were scarce. The home side's primary openings in the first period involved striker Hugo Ekitiké.
- After a smart exchange with Curtis Jones, the French international drifted infield and drew a stop from keeper Lucas Perri at his near post.
- The Leeds' goalkeeper spilled the shot, requiring a timely block from James Justin to stop Florian Wirtz converting the rebound.
- Ekitiké later raced clear onto a long ball but was held by Jaka Bijol; despite not going down, his appeals for a penalty were waved away.
Missed Chances Prove Pivotal
Ekitiké's evening worsened when he failed to hit the net with his clearest opening. Connecting with a pacy Frimpong cross in the goal area, the striker misdirected a header that hit the Perri while with an open goal.
At the other end, their clearest sight of goal arrived from an Liverpool goalkeeper mistake. The experienced keeper sent a wayward pass straight to midfielder Ethan Ampadu, whose first-time effort returned down the centre was gathered by the recovering goalkeeper.
Turgid Final Stages
The contest deteriorated into a scrappy affair, low on incident. The midfielder, back from suspension, forced a save from Perri from range. The resulting scramble resulted in Ampadu handling the ball, giving Liverpool a set-piece in a dangerous position, which Wirtz sent into the wall.
Slot introduced a three substitution to bring urgency, and soon after Virgil van Dijk went agonisingly close to heading his side in front from a set-piece, his effort bouncing just wide the post.
Substitute Dominic Calvert-Lewin believed he had continued his scoring streak for the visitors in the closing stages, but his finish was flagged out for a tight offside call. Ultimately, the two teams had to settle for a share of the spoils.
